Gabrielle Coates successfully defends a man charged with Burglary in her first jury trial

Gabrielle Coates has successfully defended a man charged with one count of Domestic Burglary at Teesside Crown Court.

Following a two-day jury trial, Gabrielle was successful in making a half-time submission of no case to answer following the Prosecution’s case. The case hinged on identification, with the Prosecution relying on inadequate CCTV footage and asking the jury to identify the Defendant.

Following this, Gabrielle argued that the identification evidence was so weak and tenuous that allowing the jury to make a determination would be unsafe.

Additionally, Gabrielle successfully challenged the Crown’s bad character application, asserting that the Crown was attempting to bolster a weak case through utilising the Defendant’s previous convictions.

Ultimately, the Judge directed the Jury to return a Not Guilty verdict.

Gabrielle was instructed by Watson Woodhouse Solicitors.
