St Pauls has a strong support culture for young practitioners. They are encouraged to seek assistance or guidance from members of chambers of varying levels of seniority to expand their career development.
Young barristers are encouraged to seek assistance or guidance from members of chambers of varying levels of seniority. This can continue beyond mini-pupillage and pupillage. On a more structured basis, chambers operate a Practice Support Scheme, an initiative introduced by the chambers’ wellbeing committee in 2020 during the national lockdown.
Members of chambers are allocated a partner and are encouraged to meet at least three times a year, although this can vary depending on the relationship between each pair. During the sessions, topics such as the current state of your practice, difficult or distressing cases, professional highlights, and career goals are discussed. This encourages junior members to discuss any difficult cases with more experienced members and vice versa.
Our barrister mentoring scheme aims to benefit a range of professionals who are early in their legal careers. Here’s how:
For example, during mentor sessions, positive achievements can also be shared as well as lessons learnt. This ensures that even during difficult periods, we are able to embrace different perspectives and contributions from different members of chambers.
Particularly, it improves the sense of belonging in chambers. Discussing difficult experiences with others who may have had a similar experience provides support and removes barriers to communication at all levels.
Because participants are able to experience one-on-one mentorship, the barrister can offer tailored advice and guidance concerning navigating the legal profession.
For example, the barrister may be able to give specific tips on how to excel in a particular area of legal expertise based on the participant’s current strengths and weaknesses.
Mentors will be able to help participants in excelling their careers, whether they want to craft a winning pupillage application or seek answers to more long-term career planning questions.
Mentees can also gain insight into how St Pauls Chambers operates, the culture, and the expectations, as well as the practical aspects of being a barrister.
