Ann Goddard Scholarship awarded to Gabrielle Coates.

Gabrielle Coates was awarded an Ann Goddard Scholarship by Gray’s Inn.

The scholarships are awarded following a paper shift and an interview.

The Ann Goddard Scholarship supports pupils, like Gabrielle, who intend to build a practice at the publicly funded Bar through legal aid.

• Ann Felicity Goddard was state school educated and she was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 1960.
• She became a Silk in 1982.
• She was Head of Chambers in 1985.
• She became a Bencher in in 1990.
• She was appointed to the circuit bench in 1993.
• She became a senior circuit judge in the Old Bailey in 1997. For many years she was the only woman judge at the Old Bailey.
• Ann Goddard had an exemplary career and continues to give back to the publicly funded bar. Ann Goddard left to Gray’s Inn a scholarship fund for pupil barristers that intend to specialise in publicly funded work.

I am very grateful to Gray’s Inn for awarding me the Ann Goddard Scholarship. This will assist me not only financially but it is also a validation of my hard work. Ann Goddard achieved great things as a publicly funded barrister from state school education and I hope to follow in her footsteps.
