In July, Denise Breen-Lawton KC and Gabrielle Coates visited Cockburn High School, Beeston, Leeds to represent St Pauls Chambers and the North Eastern Circuit.
They gave an interactive lecture to Year 10 students about pursuing a career as a barrister. Denise and Gabrielle took the students through a step by step sentencing exercise and delved into the complexities of sentencing.
The students were engaged and asked insightful questions, demonstrating a keen interest in understanding how the law impacts society. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and critical thinking as they navigated through various scenarios.
St Pauls Chambers believes in the power of education and mentoring to shape futures. It was great to engage with the students, answering their questions, and hopefully, making a positive impact on their career choices.
Many students may not be aware of the role and responsibilities of a barrister. Our aim is to demystify the profession and offer some insight and guidance on how it can become a reality.
Students can make informed decisions about their career paths if they understand the various legal careers available, including that of a barrister.
Skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, and analytical reasoning are crucial for barristers. Early guidance helps students develop these skills from a young age.
We believe that by providing career guidance in schools we can encourage a more diverse range of students to consider a career in law. This can contribute to greater diversity within the legal profession.
Introducing students to barristers can serve as inspiration and motivation. Hearing from professionals can ignite interest and aspirations in students.
Thank you to the school for inviting us and to the students for their active participation. It was an enriching experience for all.
