Major Firearms Prosecution Concludes with Lengthy Sentences in Sheffield Gun Factory Case

Members of St Pauls Chambers have played a leading role in the successful prosecution of one of the largest illegal firearms operations uncovered in the UK.

Following a complex investigation spanning more than two and a half years, twelve men have now been sentenced for their involvement in the large-scale conversion of blank-firing pistols into lethal weapons.

The case, prosecuted at Sheffield Crown Court, exposed an organised criminal network operating across Sheffield and beyond, responsible for converting and distributing firearms capable of causing serious harm. Police recovered over 100 weapons in various stages of conversion during coordinated raids in 2023.

St Pauls Chambers’ Involvement

The prosecution was led by Jonathan Sandiford KC, instructed alongside George Hazel-Owram and Kristina Goodwin, all of St Pauls Chambers.

Counsel presented detailed evidence demonstrating the scale, organisation and hierarchy of the group, built through extensive CCTV analysis, search warrants, and coordinated police operations across multiple forces.

Sentencing Outcome

The defendants received substantial custodial sentences, with terms ranging from eight years to life imprisonment, reflecting the seriousness and scale of the operation.

Public Safety Impact

South Yorkshire Police described the operation as one of the most significant of its kind, highlighting that converted blank-firing weapons account for a substantial proportion of firearms discharges in the region.

The seizure of these weapons and the dismantling of the network has prevented a significant number of firearms from reaching criminal circulation, reducing the risk to the public.

A Significant Result

This case represents a major success in tackling organised firearms crime and demonstrates the expertise of St Pauls Chambers in prosecuting complex, large-scale criminal conspiracies.
