Kristina Goodwin Secures Conviction and Sentence in Operation Zack Prosecution

Glenn Taylor was sentenced at York Crown Court last week to 3 years and 6 months’ imprisonment and a compensation order following a prosecution brought by National Trading Standards, led by York City Council as part of Operation Zack. Taylor had pleaded guilty to two counts of fraudulent trading relating to SGT Conservatories and SGT Trade Windows, together with offending involving the dishonest misuse of consumer protection and accreditation schemes to induce customers to part with substantial deposits. The prosecution case alleged losses to consumers of at least £93,000, with numerous victims suffering significant financial and emotional harm.

Kristina Goodwin prosecuted on behalf of National Trading Standards. She advised the investigation team at the pre-charge stage and continued to advise throughout the life of the case, before appearing for the prosecution at sentence. The prosecution opening described the offending as high-culpability fraudulent trading involving multiple victims over a sustained period and sought compensation for affected consumers.

Operation Zack was the investigation undertaken by York City Council Trading Standards into Taylor’s activities between 2021 and 2022. The prosecution case centred on allegations that consumers were induced to pay substantial deposits through false assurances regarding deposit protection and industry accreditation, despite there being no realistic prospect of the contracted works being completed.
