John Harrison KC successfully defended Dominique Saunders, one of two men accused of conspiring to arrange the murder of a woman in an unusual case heard at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.
The prosecution alleged that Paul Lewis had paid Saunders £1,500 to hire a hit man to kill his estranged wife, Joanne Atkinson-Lewis. Defending Mr Saunders,
Mr Harrison told the jury his client had taken advantage of Mr Lewis when he was vulnerable by scamming him and taking the money.
He said Mr Saunders “may be worthy of condemnation” but it was not evidence of an agreement to kill Mrs Atkinson-Lewis. John Harrison said his client was known as “dippy Dominique” and incapable of arranging a hit man.
“There is no evidence he was a hit man full-time, part-time or any time”
Harrison told the jury, highlighting that Saunders had simply taken advantage of a vulnerable individual, not entered into a murderous pact. he said, “if it wasn’t so serious for the defendants, it would be funny.”
The jury deliberated for just over two hours before acquitting both men, accepting the defence’s case that no genuine conspiracy existed.
