Jeremy Barnett provides his insight to the BBC on the Regulation of Cryptocurrency

Jeremy Barnett is invited by the BBC to comment on the UK Government’s push forward with plans to make the cryptocurrency industry regulated under the umbrella of mainstream financial services. The full article can be found here.

Jeremy Barnett, a barrister and honorary professor of algorithmic regulation, at University College London, said the UK had much to gain, as entrepreneurs were currently choosing to set up elsewhere.

“If you don’t have a proper regime, you drive people off shore,” he said.

“I want to see people who have cryptocurrency services and products encouraged to open for business in the UK.

“We should be in this space – but it does need to be regulated and policed.”

Jeremy is an industry expert on cryptocurrency, blockchain and Artificial Intelligence and frequently lectures on the fast-moving international codes that affect investors and developers in the UK, concerning remote jurisdictions such as Malta, Gibraltar and the USA.

He has advised international Crypto Exchange for the currency ‘Monero’ as to UK law and Regulation and other international crypto investors wishing to base their activities in London. He often works with solicitors who specialise in this emerging field, where he tends to focus on the criminal and money laundering aspects of proposed projects.

In 2017 Jeremy gave evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence. He has recently acted as a contributing author for the text book Artificial Intelligence: Law and Regulation, edited by Charles Kerrigan, where he deals with the issue of ethics in AI.

Jeremy frequently acts as a lecturer for MBL Seminars on Crypto Fraud and Regulation, dealing with subject such as the definition of a security (the Howey test), the growth of De-Fi and self regulation, NFTs, The Metaverse and general money laundering/investment issues.

In 2021, Jeremy organised and moderated a workshop at UCL entitled ‘De-Fi for Real Estate: the Mechanics of Decentralised Trust’ which considered the potential for Web 3 technologies in the global real estate sector in respect of tokenisation of assets, payments, safety and ESG performance.

Jeremy sits as a Crown Court and County Court Recorder where he regularly deals with a variety of cases including fraud, regulatory matters, clinical negligence and multi- handed cases involving football violence. He is a legal assessor who advises the Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC] and the General Dental Council [GDC] and is an accredited mediator.

He is also an Honorary Professor of Algorithmic Regulation at UCL, where he leads a research group in frontier technology in the Real Estate Sector.
