Jane Brady has been formally recognised for her outstanding contribution to one of the UK’s most complex murder trials, receiving a Commendation for Excellence at Wakefield Police Headquarters. The award was presented by Chief Constable Robins on behalf of Chief Constable Hogg of Thames Valley Police.
Reflecting on the event, Jane said,
“It was an honour to attend the ceremony and accept this commendation. I was especially pleased to share the moment with my family, who made it possible for me to work on the eight-week trial at Reading Crown Court while living in Yorkshire. Without their support, I couldn’t have done it.”
The case initially landed on Jane’s desk as a minor fraud investigation. However, her early intervention was pivotal in shifting the direction of the inquiry.
“Without my initial advice to the CPS, urging a reinvestigation and inviting the CPS Area Head to review my findings, Lynda Rickard would literally have got away with murder,” Jane stated. “I remember writing that eight-page advice document and thinking, if I get this right, it could be a great case—if I get it wrong, my pupil might need a new supervisor with some work to offer!”
The case culminated in the conviction of Lynda Rickard for murder by deliberate starvation. Her husband was found guilty of wilfully ignoring the abuse, and four others were convicted in connection with two forged wills.
Brady was quick to highlight the collaborative nature of the successful prosecution.
“We would never have secured the convictions without the incredible team led by the formidable Oliver Saxby KC (now HHJ). Special recognition must go to DC Leila Kennett, whose unwavering commitment and thorough investigation ensured every lead was pursued. I’m also grateful to Jen Riddell and Robbie Weber at the CPS, who worked closely with me to bring the case to court.”
Jane concluded by expressing her gratitude for the commendation.
“I’m truly thankful for this recognition and to everyone involved in delivering justice in such a difficult and complex case.”
