Jane Brady has been instructed to prosecute the case arising from the death of Kyle Bevan at HMP Wakefield.

Case update (publicly reported):

  • Three men have been charged with Mr Bevan’s murder: Mark Fellows (45), Lee Newell (56) and David Taylor (63).
  • They appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on 7 November 2025 and were remanded in custody.
  • The case is listed to proceed at Leeds Crown Court in due course.
  • Mr Bevan, 33, was found in his cell on the morning of 5 November 2025.
  • He was serving a life sentence (minimum term 28 years) following his 2023 conviction for the murder of two-year-old Lola James.

Background to the victim’s conviction

  • Kyle Bevan was convicted of the murder of his two-year-old step-daughter, Lola James, in July 2020.
  • The attack was described in court as a “sustained, deliberate and very violent” assault, which left Lola with more than 100 external injuries and catastrophic brain trauma.
  • Following trial, Bevan was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years.
  • His partner, Sinead James, was convicted of causing or allowing the death of a child and received a 6-year sentence.

The murder in prison

  • On 5 November 2025 (Wednesday morning) police were called to HMP Wakefield after a man was found dead in his cell.
  • The man was Kyle Bevan, aged 33.
  • Three inmates — Mark Fellows (45), Lee Newell (56) and David Taylor (63) — have been charged with his murder.
  • HMP Wakefield is a Category A high‐security prison in West Yorkshire.
  • The prison has been subject to a recent inspection report that noted increased violence, deteriorating infrastructure and that many prisoners felt unsafe.
