Harry Crowson Secures Not Guilty Verdict for Driver Involved in Callum Rycroft’s Death

Victim, Callum Rycroft

On 11th October, 2024, Harry Crowson appeared at Bradford Crown Court to appeal the charges against Mr Shaid Ilyas of dangerous driving following the tragic death of Callum Rycroft.

The Case

Mr Ilyas was unfortunate enough to be driving his hired Toyota C-HR when Callum’s father, Matthew Rycroft, led the teenager across the M62 motorway at approximately quarter to ten on the night of 5th August 2023.

Matthew Rycroft’s father was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, no such charges were brought against Mr Ilyas. The Court was in agreement that Mr Ilyas could not have done anything to avoid the impact and was not accused of being responsible for Callum’s death.

However, Mr Ilyas was charged with dangerous driving due to his actions following the collision. After the accident had taken place, Mr Ilyas exited his vehicle but was unable to see anything. Unbeknown to Mr Ilyas, the force of the collision had thrown Callum’s body into the opposite lane.

After assessing the damage to the vehicle, Mr Ilyas drove his car over two miles before pulling off at the nearest service station to contact his hire car company. Upon hearing the news of Callum’s death the following day, he contacted the police via his solicitor to admit his involvement in the collision.

The Verdict

While the prosecution alleged that Mr Ilyas could have stopped on the hard shoulder or driven into a lay-by, the evidence brought forward by Harry convinced the Jury of his innocence. After just over an hour, the Jury found him Not Guilty.
