On Wednesday 21st June 2023, at approximately 14:20, there was a serious road traffic collision in Bradford, between a stolen Kawasaki Motorcycle, which the Defendant was driving and a Hyundai motor vehicle.
The Defendant was riding the motorcycle with a pillion passenger on the motorcycle. Neither the Defendant nor the passenger were wearing crash helmets at the time. The motorcycle undertook a vehicle at high speed, before swerving into the main carriageway through a speed camera, at 72.3mph on a 30mph road. The motorcycle continued travelling along this road, but the Hyundai began to execute a U-Turn manoeuvre. The Defendant was travelling too fast to react to the Hyundai and there was a high speed collision.
The Defendant and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. The passenger hitting the windscreen of a parked motor vehicle first and then landing on the grassed area.
The Defendant and passenger sustained serious injuries in the collision. They were both taken to Leeds General Infirmary.
The Defendant pleaded Guilty to charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking (driver did not take) and vehicle damage of £5,000 and over.
On 15th November 2024, the Defendant was sentenced to a suspended sentence 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, given the Defendant’s age at the time of the offence, where Gabrielle Coates prosecuted. He was also disqualified from driving for a period of two years.
The Defendant was a youth at the time of the offence and therefore the Sentencing Guidelines for Children and Young People were considered and applied.
