Mediation (MIAM)
Barristers at St Pauls offer their clients the option of resolving their disputes through mediation, either before or during the court process. This does not prevent the parties going on to litigate their dispute before the court if an agreement cannot be reached. However, it affords an opportunity to explore options for resolution of the financial issues with the confidence of knowing that the mediation is being handled by a specialist lawyer with experience of the likely outcomes.

What is MIAM?
MIAM stands for Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting. Many couples wish to explore alternative ways to resolve disputes between them before resorting to court. During a MIAM, a mediator helps you to find alternative solutions to your problems. The process can take place between just you and the mediator, or you can choose for your ex-partner to be there too.
To do this, your mediator will go through the following:
- Explaining what mediation is.
- Why mediation and resolving these types of disputes are so important.
- Talking through the options available to you.
- How much mediation will cost you, and whether you are eligible for Legal Aid and free mediation.
What happens after a MIAM?
Once the meeting is over, the mediator will advise you on the next steps to take and whether or not your situation is suitable for mediation.
Your mediator may advise that mediation is not suitable for your case, and will sign a MIAM form that will be presented to court and allow you to continue with proceedings.
