What is Copyright Fraud?
Copyright protects the makers or owners of creative works. This covers literary works, dramatic works, artistic works, broadcasts, films, sound recordings and typographical arrangements of published editions.
There is no requirement that the copyright be registered. It is clearly advisable to label the piece of work with a © symbol and name. This firstly ensures that the existence of the copyright will be realised and secondly ensures that anyone wanting to reproduce the copyright material can locate the copyright holder.
Anyone who reproduces or copies anything covered by copyright infringes copyright. There are some exceptions to this – teaching, non-commercial research, criticism, review and reporting current events, recording to watch at a more convenient time and for the disabled.

The Evolvement of Copyright Fraud
The days of copyright fraud being the domain of market traders selling fake clothing, DVDs and CDs are long gone. The modern copyright fraudsters are using the internet with items shared by streaming or cloud sharing. Money is made not necessarily from the selling of copyright protected material but by advertising revenue calculated by “hits”. The sale of counterfeit tobacco and alcohol remain ever present as well but although involve copyright infringement are normally prosecuted as VAT or excise duty evasion.
