Oliver Norman joined chambers as a tenant following a successful pupillage at a criminal defence firm, gaining extensive experience in conducting advocacy in various courts and settings.
In the Crown Court Oliver has represented clients for serious offences such as possession of a bladed article, contact offences and breach of SHPO, dangerous driving, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
In the Magistrates’ Court Oliver has conducted trials for offences such as burglary, handling stolen goods, sexual assault, breach of SHPO, breach of restraining order, breach of community order, indecent exposure, assault, public order, and dangerous dog out of control causing injury. Oliver has experience with first hearings, sentencing hearings, bail applications, and Newton hearings.
In the Youth Court Oliver has represented young defendants on offences such as GBH, assault, criminal damage, theft and burglary, his adaptive advocacy style suited the needs and abilities of the young clients and ensured that they understood the proceedings and their rights.

A case of deferred sentence, Oliver persuaded the judge to deal with a repeat offender by way of deferred sentence even though they were in breach of a community order and suspended sentence for similar offences.

Oliver is frequently called upon to handle a broad spectrum of driving-related cases including driving over the prescribed limit, failing to stop/report an accident, failing to provide a specimen as well as careless and dangerous driving. Oliver’s deep understanding of motoring law, a unique and intricate subset of criminal law, equips him with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully defend these cases. His experience in this field allows him to navigate the complexities of motoring law with ease, providing robust defence strategies for his clients.
At Nottingham Crown Court, Oliver successfully secured an acquittal on all counts for a defendant facing charges of controlling or coercive behaviour, suffocation, multiple assaults by beating, and assault on emergency worker. His strategic approach and meticulous preparation were key in addressing the prosecution’s issues effectively.
Crown Court Trial for possession of a bladed article, Oliver advised on the statutory defence under section 139A(3) of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 leading to a guilty plea being entered.
A case of sentencing at the Crown Court, Oliver advised the client, and addressed the judge on the issue of dangerousness and the criteria for imposing an extended sentence under section 226A of the Criminal Justice Act 2003.
A case of sentencing for 17 charges, including contact offences and breach of SHPO
As a defence advocate, Oliver has been instructed as trial advocate at the Crown Court providing advice on the strength of evidence, the prospects of success, the likely sentence, and the possible defences. Oliver has also advised on the procedure and the law applicable to each case.
Oliver has assisted on preparing cases for parole hearings, which involved advising clients on their eligibility, suitability, and risk assessment. Oliver has also advised clients at the police station stage for matters such as manslaughter, conspiracies, rape, s.18 and blackmail.
Additionally, Oliver has provided written advice on appeal of conviction and sentence for R v T, which related to a historic conviction of indecent assault.
