Charlie Greenwood is a busy junior with an excellent reputation. He has a broad civil practice, and accepts instructions from individuals, businesses and the government across a wide range of civil matters.

He has significant expertise and experience in commercial litigation and personal injury, and in various complementary areas within civil law generally, notably in financial mis-selling and harassment.

Charlie was appointed Junior Counsel to the Crown in 2023 on the Attorney General’s regional civil panel.

He is a recognised by the legal directories as being an impressive and persuasive advocate, and combines that advocacy with a substantial advisory and drafting practice.

Expertise

Charlie has extensive experience in a wide range of civil and commercial litigation. He is instructed as sole counsel in work that far exceeds his year of call, and is also regularly instructed as a team in conjunction with solicitors and leading counsel.

His practice covers a broad spectrum, and includes financial mis-selling, commercial fraud, professional negligence (with a particular focus on legal services), building and construction disputes, product liability and claims arising out of negligence, breach of contract and misrepresentation.

Charlie acts for various business, trusts and private clients on civil and commercial matters, and via solicitors or on a direct access basis. His practice encompasses advisory work, pleadings, applications and trials.

He also has significant experience of alternative dispute resolution, including mediation.

Charlie can be engaged on an hourly rate or fixed fee where appropriate.

Notable Civil & Commercial Litigation cases


Advising on the legal and strategic aspects of claims that are being brought against a marketing company alleged to have fraudulently induced investors into a failed investment scheme.


Acting for the Ombudsman Service in various claims brought against it alleging some form of discrimination and/or harassment.


Advising a firm of solicitors regarding a litigated dispute over the non-payment of referral fees.


Advising a teachers’ union as to high-value contractual agreements it has in place with conference centres.


An action in the High Court (Technology and Construction Court) regarding the failure to safely remove asbestos from an important property.

Charlie undertakes work across the full breadth of personal injury law. He combines advisory and drafting work with a busy court practice. He advises on case strategy, liability and quantum, in addition to drafting pleadings for all level of injuries (including cases involving very significant injury). He is able to turn papers round at short notice.

He has particular expertise in employers’ liability, public liability and defective product litigation. He is often asked to advise on discrete areas of law (that can overlap with his commercial litigation practice), as well as case management as a whole.

Charlie’s court practice includes regular attendance at:

  • Fast and Multi-track trials;
  • Case and Cost Management Conferences (CCMCs);
  • Interim hearings and applications;
  • Portal and disposal hearings.

Recent example of multi-track work include:

  • Representing a severely brain-injured claimant at a JSM following a fall outside his shop. Liability, contributory negligence and quantum were in dispute. The matter successfully settled at the JSM for a six-figure sum;
  • Advising a claimant who suffered a life-changing fracture following a fall down a flight of outdoor stairs, involving occupational health and safety experts;
  • Representing a claimant at trial who suffered a severe hand crush injury, following allegations of a failure to follow training, a failure to wear appropriate PPE and dishonesty.

Charlie undertakes tribunal work, and regularly appears for appellants in the First-Tier Tribunal (Criminal Injuries Compensation).

He adopts a flexible approach to his practice, and is happy to provide informal advice by telephone or email during any stage of proceedings.

Charlie has in depth knowledge and experience of civil harassment cases, and all related issues arising from the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

Charlie frequently represents Ombudsman Services and various government bodies (via the Government Legal Department) accused of subjecting individuals to harassment. Theses cases often have a cross-over with various other claims, including allegations of discrimination and breaches of the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998.

Such cases often require early and robust tactics, in particular summary judgment and/or strike-out applications.

Significant Cases Include


Inman v Ombudsman Service Ltd

Charlie acted for the Ombudsman in a claim for over £200,000 in damages following alleged discrimination and harassment. The claim was struck out and summary judgment entered following a two-day hearing.


Blenkinsop v CICA

Charlie acted for the appellant in an appeal to the First Tier Tribunal. The CICA initially awarded her £11,000 for her injuries, and nothing for loss of earnings. On appeal, the Tribunal awarded her £22,000 for her injuries, and loss of earnings of £113,103.


Akram v Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council

Charlie acted for the Claimant at a JSM with a significant dispute as to the level of future care required, given significant pre-existing comorbities.
