Criminal Law
Ayman’s Crown Court practice covers the full spectrum of criminal offences including serious violence, robbery, theft, fraud, drugs, firearms, modern-day slavery, sexual assault, and driving matters. Ayman also acts for local authorities in licensing and trading standards prosecutions. Ayman is a Grade 2 Prosecutor.
Recent work includes the successful prosecutions of an employee who stole £35, 000 from her workplace over 6 years, a newsagent selling counterfeit cigarettes on an industrial scale, and a sophisticated conspiracy to steal motor vehicles across West Yorkshire using keyless method of entry.
Since October 2020, Ayman has been instructed by the National Crime Agency to advise on the implementation of Third-Party Disclosure Orders obtained in relation to Operation Stovewood, an investigation into historical child sexual abuse featuring over 1, 000 Complainants. Ayman has advised on the scope of the Production Orders, identified salient material from thousands of handwritten exhibits, and supervised a redaction strategy that carefully balances data protection concerns with the needs of the investigative process.
Ayman is experienced in cases involving expert evidence having effectively cross-examined Forensic Accountants and Cell-Site Analysts. He is also familiar with confiscation proceedings and has completed the Vulnerable Witness Training Course.
Ayman has made several successful appearances in the Court of Appeal including securing the reduction of a 2-year sentence of imprisonment for PWITS Class A to 8 months.
Actions Against the Police
Ayman predominantly acts for Claimants in actions for Wrongful Arrest, False Imprisonment, Trespasses to Person and Property, Misfeasance in Public Office, and Malicious Prosecution as well as Unlawful Stop & Search.
From his criminal practice, Ayman has a detailed knowledge of police procedure and investigative techniques, which he deploys effectively for the benefit of his clients. His ability to think outside the box is particularly valuable in this area of law.
In September 2021, in a claim for Wrongful Arrest and False Imprisonment, at trial, Ayman secured a rare finding that the arresting officer lacked reasonable grounds to suspect his client had committed an offence.
Recent settlements in which Ayman was involved include:
– Unlawful Stop & Search – a Jewish male unlawfully searched for not conforming to how Met Officers expected a Jewish male to behave during the Sabbath.
– Unlawful Arrest/False Imprisonment – a supply teacher wrongfully arrested on suspicion of Voyeurism. As a consequence, he was suspended from work which led to a five-figure compensation settlement for his loss of earnings.
– Trespass to Property/Unlawful Arrest/False Imprisonment – Police arrested a male simply to search his property under S17 of PACE where there was no justification for not obtaining a Search Warrant under S8.
Personal Injury
In his early years of practice, Ayman regularly attended Fast-Track Trials, Small-Claims, Disposals, Stage 3s, and Interim Applications. He also advised on liability and quantum.
Ayman retains an interest in high-value Credit Hire disputes and cases involving allegations of Fundamental Dishonesty having previously obtained costs orders disapplying QOCs.
