Andrew Stranex is an experienced criminal advocate. He spent three years with the Criminal Cases Review Commission before being called to the Bar and has worked within the criminal justice system since 1986.
Andrew practises exclusively in Criminal Law with a 90/10 split between defence / prosecution. His particular areas of expertise include serious and organised crime cases, serious violence, modern day slavery cases, serious sexual assault and motoring offences. He also has a number of years’ experience of representing defendants in Courts Martial. He is a Grade 3 CPS Panel Advocate.
R v Hunt & Others
Led in defence of lead defendant in three-month-trial of man alleged to be involved at heart of large heroin, amphetamine and car ringing conspiracies. Significant issues relating to allegations of police corruption and mis-management of informants (CHIS). Acquitted of heroin and car counts, jury discharged on amphetamine. At subsequent trial jury discharged on conspiracy to supply amphetamine but later sentenced on admitted lone supply of amphetamine.

Defended man charged with targeted aggravated burglary of severely disabled man. Due to disability no statement in conventional terms – interviewed by officers on video. Only response indications of “yes”, “no” or “don’t know”. Some further gesticulation and sounds.
R v Ali & Others
Led in defence of man charged in large drugs and burglary conspiracy. Newton Hearing regarding evidence of drugs present on notes recovered. Expert evidence regarding mass spectrometry analysis. Represented Ali, alone, at subsequent Attorney General’s Reference.
R v Stocks
Led by QC in large heroin importation and supply. Briefed also in subsequent confiscation hearing.
R v Revitt & Others
Led in prosecution of 20 Sheffield United supporters charged with violent disorder.
R v Muhamed
Defended Kurdish man charged with Section 18 Wounding (stabbing). Acquitted.
R v Birdi
Defended male charged with group attack on police officer (Section 18). Acquitted.
R v Hussain
Defended taxi driver accused of robbing passenger. Acquitted.
R v Malik
Defended male charged with conspiracy to rob (armed) – Crown offer no evidence 5 days into trial. Convicted at later trial of second count of obtaining by deception.
R v H
Defended (as leader) young girl charged in large multi-handed conspiracy to launder proceeds of crime. Application to dismiss charges successful.
R v Hillas
Led for the defence of man charged as part of large burglary and car “ringing” conspiracy.
R v Bakke
Prosecuted former Leeds United footballer, defended by “Mr Loophole” Nick Freeman, for failing to provide breath specimen. Convicted.
R v B
Defended man charged with rape of partner. Issues relating to mental health of both defendant and complainant. Acquitted.
R v B
Defended B charged under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 with attempted oral rape. Acquitted.
R v P
Defended father accused of indecent assault on his 9 year-old daughter.
