A proud moment for Helen Chapman, a former Middle Temple Scholar

A proud moment for Helen Chapman at the Middle Temple Scholars Exhibition this week. Helen’s success at the Bar is being celebrated alongside 25 others who were awarded scholarships by Middle Temple and have been selected to appear in the exhibition running until the end of the year in Middle Temple Hall.

Helen was awarded the Benefactors’ Scholarship in 2004. The scholarship allowed her to take the Bar Vocational Course, as it then was, and she began pupillage in London in 2006. She joined St Pauls Chambers in 2014.

Securing a scholarship from one of the Inns of Court is regarded as a prestigious achievement, recognising a candidate’s potential and excellence in the legal field. With over £6.5 million awarded annually, these scholarships are a critical resource for those aiming to alleviate the high costs associated with training and early practice.

The four Inns of Court in England and Wales—Inner Temple, Middle Temple, Gray’s Inn, and Lincoln’s Inn—provide significant financial support for aspiring barristers, offering millions in awards that cover scholarships, bursaries, and grants. The financial assistance aims to help candidates with expenses related to the Bar course, law conversion courses, pupillages, internships, and other professional development opportunities.

According to Jonny Boyd, Middle Temple’s scholarships officer, these scholarship programs are designed to support the next generation of barristers.

St Pauls Chambers is committed to providing resource and opportunity for aspiring barristers to join the profession. We recognise that achievements like Helen’s require investment in the abilities of junior members of the profession from all backgrounds.

Our next event will be an open evening on Tuesday 10th December 2024 from 17:30 at the Radisson Hotel in Leeds. This event will provide guidance and advice from barristers at St Pauls Chambers on the pathways available to those looking for a career at the Bar. It is a great event to hear from barristers at all levels about their experiences, useful hints and tips and the financial support available.
