In 2006 Richard Barraclough KC represented a Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to a number of counts of indecent assault committed whilst he was chaplain at the School for the Deaf in Wetherby Yorkshire. He was sentenced by the Recorder of Leeds to a suspended sentence. A number of more serious matters were not pursued. The Court was not aware of a previous conviction in the Isle of Man when the defendant indecently assaulted a 9 year old child. He was at the time a priest in Northern Island. He was moved to Leeds and then appointed chaplain to the school in 1974. The matter was the subject of an investigation by the Observer and a claim for compensation was made by a number of victims against the diocese of Leeds.
The matter has since been the subject of an inquiry and compensation claim.
