The July discussion and networking Forum: Development Finance and the Leeds Green Economy

The Green Economy represents a major opportunity to provide business opportunities, jobs and exports. As one of the largest financial centres in the world, the UK should be well placed to provide financial resources to green industry. As a major centre for cleantech  development, Yorkshire's ability to capitalise on this opportunity depends on it.

Yet overall public and private investment in cleantech innovation and R & D investment continues to lag behind many other countries. There are particular difficulties for businesses to access finance for investment at the point of early and late-stage innovation.

Green small and medium sized businesses (SMEs), which account for 91.5 per cent of the Low Carbon Environmental Goods and Services (LCEGSs) sector, face even more acute problems because of higher perceived levels of risk and inability to secure debt funding.

The Governments Green Investment Bank (GIB) was set up to make a radical new contribution to financing green infrastructure. Will it, can it be effective?
What other mechanisms are needed to move us forward into the Green Economy faster here in Yorkshire?

Joining an expert panel to discuss and debate this subject:

Jerry Biggs, CEO at Narec Capital, an industry fund and incubator
Jon Price, Director of the Centre for Low Carbon Futures
Richard Goodfellow, Head of Energy and Low Carbon Partner, Addleshaw Goddard
Jeremy Barnett, Specialist Barrister on Carbon Law and Renewable Energy at St Pauls Chambers
Robert Hokin, Chief Executive at ecoConnect, national green industry business network
