Jayne Drake joined St Pauls Chambers in 2000, from 8 KBW (now 1 Mitre Court).

She has been clerking since 1995 and accepted the position of Senior Clerk at St Pauls in 2009. Jayne plays a proactive role in the development of chambers, providing strategic leadership and direction on the management of the set. Jayne is part of the day to day clerking team and can provide assistance, support and advice across the practice areas. She is approachable, professional and knowledgeable.

Marketing and practice development play an integral part of Jayne’s role.  She is extremely knowledgeable on Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and website development.  In the real world of people, Jayne is well-connected and enjoys networking and B2B marketing.

As Senior Clerk, Jayne seen a number of counsel elevations to Silk/Bench or both. Since 2009 eight members of chambers have been appointed to the Bench. The former Head of Chambers, HHJ Guy Kearl KC is now the Recorder of Leeds.  With Jayne’s support and steer, six members of chambers have been awarded Silk and 2024 will see a further three being sworn in. There are 14 Silks on our board and an a number of Judges that began their careers at St Pauls Chambers.

Jayne plays an active role in the regulatory compliance of chambers. She provides support to the BSB on the promotion of standards and best practice on equality and access to justice. Jayne is keen to ensure that quality of opportunity, positive career development and fair distribution of work are primary concerns in her role as senior clerk.

In 2023, the clerks at St Pauls were invited by the Ministry of Justice and HMCTS to be involved in the Court Efficiency Project. The report, produced in January 2024 serves to provide an understanding of what impacts the efficiency of the Criminal Justice System through the Crown Court.

Jayne is a member of the Institute of Barristers’ Clerk for many years and will take up the challenge to chair the IBC conference in 2024.
